Improving the quality and performance of electrical power data

Laborelec has all the equipment and knowledge needed to retrieve, store, analyze, and manage electrical power data. Our activities range from monitoring power quality and the performance of renewable energy generation units to smart metering and calibration.

Accredited calibration of electrical measuring instruments (*)

The Laborelec Metrology Lab (*) is accredited for calibrating electrical measurement instruments. This accreditation is partially based on an interlaboratory comparison among ten electricity companies and manufacturers of energy meters and standards in Western Europe. Our metrology lab is also accredited for the calibration of electric and magnetic field meters.Logo BEMEKO

Short- and long-term power quality monitoringMetering

Laborelec has an extensive track record in conducting power quality studies. We have the equipment and the expertise required to conduct both short- and long-term measurements and offer the appropriate remedial and preventive advice. We are thus able to help network operators and industrial companies identify the root causes of power quality problems, such as voltage dips. We can also carry out long-term monitoring campaigns and provide daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly reporting.

Photovoltaic and windturbineMonitoring the performance of wind turbines and photovoltaic plants

Optimizing the performance of renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and photovoltaic (PV) plants requires permanent monitoring. Laborelec has developed a monitoring tool that can detect a drop in the performance of an entire site or of an individual wind turbine or PV unit, regardless of brand or technology. The tool can also calculate the impact of wind turbine stoppages—due to ice build-up, stroboscopic effects, and noise levels—on the turbine’s overall output. We offer frequent reporting and advice, based on our measurements, to help operators improve performance and avoid costly damage.

Performance monitoring of electric vehicles

What is the influence of electric vehicles on local electricity consumption? Laborelec has developed a tool to monitor an electric vehicle’s long-term performance, behaviour, and wear. For example, it registers parameters such as battery consumption and health in function of driver behaviour.

Optimizing bidirectional power line communicationGrid_Substation

Smart metering and smart lighting require data to be transmitted, possibly over power lines. But how can one verify that there are no disturbances hampering this data transfer? Laborelec has developed a long-term high frequency power line communication (PLC) assessment tool that measures signals over the electricity network on-site at high frequencies, over very long periods. This tool can be used to conduct preliminary studies, choose the best PLC bandwidth, and help detect PLC disturbances.

Substation automation according to IEC 61850 standard

Automating substations is a complex challenge since each substation component uses its own information model and communication protocol. The IEC 61850 standard has been developed to harmonize the communication between these components. Implementing this standard, however, impacts engineering and substation information modelling and communication. Laborelec provides assistance in modelling substations in compliance with this standard.
